The death of Atul Subhash, a deputy general manager at an automobile firm in Bengaluru, has brought into focus the challenges faced by individuals embroiled in contentious domestic and legal conflicts.
Atul Subhash, who was found dead in his apartment in Bengaluru’s Munnekollal locality, left behind a detailed 24-page note and an 81-minute video explaining his ordeal. The note and video suggest that relentless harassment, both legal and emotional, played a significant role in his decision. His brother, Bikas Kumar, has filed a police complaint accusing Subhash’s estranged wife, Nikita Singhania, along with her mother, brother, and uncle, of abetment to suicide. Kumar alleges that demands amounting to₹3 crore to withdraw cases and₹30 lakh for visitation rights to his son were made by his in-laws.
Subhash’s tumultuous relationship with Nikita, a software professional, began in 2019 when they married. However, the marriage quickly deteriorated, leading to a series of legal battles. Subhash was reportedly facing nine cases, including severe allegations like murder, dowry harassment, and unnatural sex, filed by Nikita and her family. His parents were also implicated in some cases.
In his suicide note, Subhash expressed his anguish, claiming to have been mentally and physically drained from constant court hearings and alleged bias in the judicial process. He accused a family court judge in Uttar Pradesh of corruption and requested that his in-laws not be allowed to see his body. He also stated that his ashes should be discarded in a gutter if justice was not served, highlighting his despair and plea for accountability.
Bikas Kumar, speaking to the media, underscored the toll these events had taken on his brother. He emphasized the need for justice to send a strong societal message, pointing out the imbalance in legal protections that he perceives favors women over men in such disputes.
The Marathahalli police have registered a case and are investigating the allegations. A police team from Bengaluru is expected to question Nikita and her family members.
This case serves as a grim reminder of the need for fair and timely justice in domestic disputes and the importance of addressing mental health issues arising from legal and familial conflicts.
